Do you know what a bronchodilator is?

It’s something that can help your airways relax. When they relax, more oxygen can get into your lungs and into your blood. That’s what you want… especially if you have the flu!

This 1998 animal study on guinea pigs found ajwain oil had relaxing and bronchodilatory benefits. So ajwain oil may ease your stuffy nose and congested sinuses. It also works well to treat coughs and colds.

Oh, and for the record, thymol isn’t responsible for these ajwain oil benefits. It’s alpha-pinene!

Another study from 2012 found the oil killed mosquito larvae at really low concentrations. And, not only that, the oil prevented the mosquito eggs from hatching a couple days after the oil was applied.

A 2009 Korean study used 26 essential oils on Japanese termites. And ajwain, allspice, caraway, dill, and geranium oils had the strongest insecticidal activity.

Ajwain Oil Uses

Add a few drops to your diffuser to clear up your sinuses, and ease your coughs. Or blend it with spicy oils like sage and thyme. It also works really well with citrus oils like bergamot, lemon and orange.

You can use it in your massaging blends too, but make sure you do a skin patch test to see if you are allergic to the oil. If you are not, then mix two or three drops of ajwain oil to a teaspoon of your favorite carrier oil like jojoba or tamanu.

Some aromatherapists suggest the oil may stimulate your appetite. Keep that in mind and talk to your doctor before using the oil. This is important if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any special medication.
